Feeds and RSS

Whenever you are on a webpage and you see the symbol I have above, that means you can put a feed to that website into a feed reader (normally by using the URL of the feed) and this will always display the latest content from that page in the reader. This means that you can collate information from many websites into one place instead of having to go to each of the webpages individually. Many websites will have RSS feeds available directly from the site. There are also some places you can go to search for feeds which I have listed below.

I have cobbled together slides from other presentations as well as making my own to create a presentation which you can view below:

This excellent video from Commoncraft really helps to explain the RSS process.

Places to get feeds

You can get feeds from any site that has the symbol above which you then place into the feed reader of your choice.
There are over 40 000 feeds in this database which can be searched to find an appropriate feed.

Tutorials on working with feeds

I put together this four page tutorial.

Feed Readers

Wizz RSS
This works with Firefox (though there are Beta versions that can be used with other browsers). Click and drag an RSS symbol into the sidebar (which you can open from the toolbar) and you will be able to see the latest content from that feed and then click on it to be taken to the associated website for more detail.
Another Firefox Extension. Uses a drop down list of feeds which you can add to when on a site that offers feeds (look for the symbol) by clicking on Discover Feeds. When you click on the name of a feed, the browser window becomes a feed reader.
Google Homepage
With a Google Account you can customise a home page with the feeds and gadgets of your choice. This is also a good place to find out about other available widgets. There is also a Google Reader page in Google Labs that can be used to gather together internet feeds.
This is a website page that you can drop you choice of feeds onto. There are many options of feeds that you can add to the page or you can manually add a feed of your choice (using the feed URL).
This is a very similar concept to NetVibes with your favourite feeds tiled over a page.
Feeds Reddit
Another customisable website to display feeds that you are interested in.

Accumulated Feeds

Friend Feed
external image logo-b.png?v=141bf9223b0f653d28248d187df2725cFriend Feed is a site that allows you to channel the feeds from all the different networks and services that you belong to so that other people can see all the updates you are making within each one of them in one place.

PostRank is a scoring system to rank any kind of online content, such as RSS feed items, blog posts, articles, or news stories. PostRank is based on social engagement, which refers to how interesting or relevant people have found an item or category to be. Examples of engagement include writing a blog post in response to someone else, bookmarking an article, leaving a comment on a blog, or clicking a link to read a news item.
